You just put the clamp end on the pos battery terminal then put the other end on the end of the glow plug. If it doesn't light the lamp it's buggered. If the relay goes faulty I think the ECU can detect a problem and throws a fault code. Just fill it up until oil comes out of the level bung hole, refit the bung and give the wheels a spin, wait a minute then recheck oil level. If oil comes out of the oil level plug then it's spot on.
